An old, color image of Monument Square in downtown Racine, Wis. There is a row of shops and a bank along the left side, and another bank in the right distance. Cars from the 1950s are parked in a diagonal pattern in front of the shops on the left, green, red, gray, black, yellow, two-tone blue and white, and so on. In the foreground are a short, green border hedge, a bank of yellow day lilies, a rectangular reflecting pool, and near the right side a tall, stone monument with a Union soldier standing at the top. A postcard-style caption is above it all: A 1960's Scoopin Tour of Downtown Racine.

A 1950s & 1960s Scooping Tour of Downtown Racine

Seat booking required—see below for easy instructions

For our August program, Preservation Racine members Carol Gianforte and Jim Mercier will host a nostalgic presentation: "A 1950s & 1960s Scooping Tour of Downtown Racine.” Although they have presented Preservation Racine programs over the past several years, this oral history of Racine will include over 50 enhanced visuals describing the tradition of "Scooping the Loop," the colorful cars, and even the music of the era. Moreover it will also include photos of many favorite downtown stores and landmarks. The enhancements bring vibrant color and movement to photos of the past.

Carol is a local freelance writer and author of My Heart Leads Me Home; A Daughter's Memoir. Jim is a noted collector of Racine historical memorabilia, especially of items once made in Racine. Both are monthly guests on the WRJN Radio’s Don Rosen Show, bringing nostalgic Racine memories to life.

At the opening of the program, Preservation Racine president Scott Leonard will provide a brief update on the September 27 Tour of Historic Places. Yard signs for the Tour will be available after the presentation, at one of the exits. There will be no other business at this meeting.

This month’s program will be presented at the stunning SC Johnson Golden Rondelle Theater (address above). Lobby doors will open at 6:00 pm, the theater opens for seating at 6:30 pm, and the program begins at 7:00 pm.

IMPORTANT NOTE ABOUT ATTENDING: Space for this program will be made available to the public, and reservations are required for all programs at the Golden Rondelle. SC Johnson will hold a number of seats for Preservation Racine members. If you will attend, please contact Michelle Sweetman either at 262-260-2252 or mtsweetm@scj.com by August 27 – in your message, include your name and how many seats you or your party will need.

SJ Johnson also will offer a Wright at Night evening tour of their campus after our program. If you are interested in that, you can say so on the same phone call or email message as for the main program.

Carol and Jim will repeat this program to the public at the Golden Rondelle two nights later, on Wednesday, September 2, also at 7:00 pm. If you prefer that date, please reserve online at scjohnson.com/CIP or phone 262-260-2154.
