Swimming and Sunning in the 1950s and 1960s

by Carol Gianforte and Jim Mercier

The Racine duo of Carol Gianforte and Jim Mercier are back by popular request for another nostalgic program, “Swimming and Sunning in the 1950s and 1960s” – Washington Park Pool and the Racine Beaches of North Beach, Zoo Beach, and the 14th Street Beach. Over one hundred photos will enhance the program. You may be in one of the pictures if you were there.

Both Gianforte and Mercier have previously presented popular memories of Racine during that era, mostly given at the Golden Rondelle Theater. Over 7,000 people have attended these programs. Topics have ranged from “Let’s Go Shopping,” which reviewed the scores of stores and shops in downtown Racine, to “Entertainment Downtown,” which included dance venues such as the Nitty Gritty and activities like “Scooping the Loop.”

Currently, Gianforte and Mercier are monthly guests on WRJN’s Don Rosen Show, presenting topics of the former era, such as “Elmwood Plaza in its Heyday” and “Christmas Shopping with a Walk Down 6th Street.”

The current “Swimming and Sunning” program is open and free to the public. It will take place on Monday, August 25, at Living Faith Lutheran Church as a special presentation by Preservation Racine. Doors open at 6:30 pm, and the program immediately follows a very short business meeting.

Light refreshments will be served in the lower level. There is elevator access to the sanctuary level.

Parking is available in lots on the west and south sides of the church. Reservations are not required.
