The Story of Racine Parks

We have had a scheduling conflict with the proposed program for our April membership meeting, which had been a program on the history of gas stations in Wisconsin. We now have planned a wonderful new replacement program for our April meeting. Alan Karls has accepted our invitation to speak about a subject that he has researched thoroughly, the public parks of Racine.

Alan will present a program describing the influence that famed landscape architect Jens Jensen had on Island Park in Racine and the story of how a grand plan to develop Racine parks failed to materialize. Alan is a Racine native who has written about the history of Racine Horlick Athletic Field: Drums along the Foundries. He has created a slide show containing images of Jens Jensen's plans and other materials which have not been seen by the public for over 100 years. You will learn facts about Racine that may startle you.

Annual Election

Pre-program business meeting will include the election for some board positions, with a slate of names presented by the Nominating Committee. In this cycle, for two-year terms, they are:

  • President: Scott Leonard
  • Vice President: Carmel Ruffolo
  • At-Large #2: Dorothy Sack
